We are right at that time of year with lots of reasons to celebrate! Whether it be a strong finish to 2019, time with family and friends, or a time to reflect and plan the new year, you can’t celebrate without festive holiday sips! You will love a sweet silky and warm hot Krampus Cocoa when your body needs to thaw from winter’s chill. Turmeric tea is another sip that can either be enjoyed in the morning to feel refreshed or evening for better sleep. And of course, when you want to wind down with something that will tingle your toes, try out this nice fizzy Cranberry Moscow Mule.
Growing up, holidays sucked for me. There was always a fight that broke out within the family before Christmas dinner so, I’d end up taking my plate to my bedroom and eating in solitude. We’re talking some full-on “Jerry Springer” bullshit. For this reason, I make it a point to appreciate this time of year because I want my own children to feel festive vibes, gratefulness, and positive memories of Christmas in our home. We watch as many holiday films we can, eat more meals together around the dinner table, and have lazy pajama days during school break. Those are the good things, folks. They truly are. Hopefully, these festive holiday sips will help you celebrate and enjoy Christmas time along with all of your traditions in your home.
Let the festive holiday sips begin!
Krampus Cocoa
I shared this recipe a year ago on my instagram and I had to share it once more, it is that good! Oh and you read the recipe right! Yes, there are beets in the sip which gives the cocoa a beautiful deep chocolaty red hue and a creamy consistency. Although the recipe reads “Cocoa”, I use cacao powder as the chocolaty ingredient because it is the purest form of chocolate you can consume. It is raw and less processed than cocoa powder not to mention an excellent source of nutrients like vitamins, minerals, natural carbs, and protein. Vegan Alert:Â If you want to use regular cocoa powder, look for plain or Dutch (dark) powder as the mixes can contain more sugar and milk powder.
2 cups almond milk
1 large beet, cooked then peeled and grated
3 tbsp cacao powder
1 tbsp blue agave nectar
4 dates, pits removed
1 tsp vanilla extract
dash of cinnamon
dash of cayenne pepper (if you desire a bit of ‘OH, SNAP!”)
Shit to do
Combine milk along with grated cooked beet, cacao, agave nectar, dates, and vanilla into a high speed blender and blend until smooth. Transfer cocoa to a medium sauce pan and bring to a low simmer, stirring occasionally so it doesn’t stick to the pan. Once warm, pour into serving mugs and top with cinnamon and cayenne.
*To cook beet, you can roast it whole wrapped in foil at 350 degrees. Once it has cooled, the skin will peel off really easy. Then you can grate it or chop it into small pieces before blending. And, you might wear food gloves so you don’t get your hands stained.
Golden Turmeric Tea
This is a fantastic sip to enjoy at the beginning OR end of your day. And, turmeric is the star of this show! It’s not “festive looking” but I tend to drink it during the winter months so…good enough for me! Used for thousands of years by India as a spice and medicinal herb, turmeric is quite the magical dust. The healing compound within turmeric (curcumin) has powerful anti-inflammatory effects and is a hella-strong antioxidant. By adding pepper to this sip, it will work with the curcumin and enhance the absorption of it into your bloodstream easier than consuming the curcumin alone.
2 cups almond milk
1 1/2 tsp ground turmeric
1/2 tsp cinnamon
1 small piece of ginger, skin on
pinch each of ground clove, black pepper, and cayenne
sweetener of your choice, 1-2 packets or 1 tbsp of raw honey (if you are eating honey) or maple syrup
Shit to do
Add all ingredients into a blender and blend until combined. Pour mixture into a small non-stick sauce pan and heat. Once heated, pour in cups and sprinkle cinnamon on top before serving.
